bio: matthew ross
Matthew Ross is a filmmaker and journalist born and raised in New York City. His award-winning short films Lola, Red Angel, and Curtis and Clover have screened at dozens of film festivals, including Slamdance, SXSW, Tribeca, Cinevegas, Woodstock, Sarasota, the Hamptons, Maryland, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, Williamstown, Fayetteville, and many others.
Other filmmaking work includes a directing and producing a series of short videos for FIGHT! Media that have been seen several million times on the Internet. In June, 2010, Matthew was commissioned by Random House to write, produce, direct and photograph a fictional short starring Kip Pardue and James Van Der Beek to help promote the release of Bret Easton Ellis’s new novel, Imperial Bedrooms. He also directed AM60’s “Just a Dream” video for Sony Music.
He will make his feature-length directorial debut with the psychological thriller Frank & Lola. Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and Parts and Labor’s Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy are producing. The script for Frank & Lola was chosen as one of the 15 best screenplays of the Slamdance Screenplay Competition.
Matthew’s has been featured in a number of publications, including Movieline, The Huffington Post, Film Monthly, The Austin Chronicle, and Flaunt, which described his work as being “hard-edged and marvelously acted”.
Matthew's script Plays Well With Others was one of six scripts selected to the 2002 Hamptons Film Festival Screenwriters Conference. Commercial helmer Pat Sherman is attached to direct. Other screenwriting work includes the crime thriller Unsound for Palmstar Entertainment and acclaimed director Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Transsiberian, Next Stop Wonderland) and an untitled sex thriller for Magnet Management.
Matthew was the managing editor of Filmmaker magazine from 2003 to 2006, during which time he wrote over a dozen cover stories, including the last in-depth interview given by legendary director Robert Altman. He continues to write about film, culture, media, and sports for a number of national publications. Matthew has also held staff editor/writer positions at Variety, indieWIRE, FIGHT! magazine, IFCRant, The Daily Reel, and Creative Planet.
Matthew graduated Cum Laude with honors from Harvard with a degree in Visual and Environmental Studies. He currently lives in Los Angeles. He is represented by Magnet Management.
